Principal's Open Day Address
Thank you all for joining us today as we celebrate both Public Education Week and Book Week here at Arcadia Public School.
I hope you have enjoyed our Book Week Parade and the wonderful performances from our choir, school band and amazing classes this morning. They are a wonderful reflection of the enthusiasm, confidence and talents of our students, and we are incredibly proud of them.
It is also lovely to see so many familiar faces here today — parents, grandparents, family members, our Playgroup friends, and families who are considering Arcadia Public School for their children. Thank you for taking the time to celebrate with us.
This week marks Public Education Week, a time for us to celebrate the opportunities public education provides and our shared commitment to inspiring excellence.
Here at Arcadia Public School, we are proud to be part of NSW public education, where every child is welcomed, supported, challenged and encouraged to achieve their personal best. Public education is about creating opportunity, building strong communities and ensuring that every child has the chance to discover who they are and what they are capable of becoming.
So, what makes Arcadia such a special place?
It starts with our students.
Every day, they amaze us with their curiosity, kindness and enthusiasm for learning. They arrive ready to ask questions, explore new ideas and challenge themselves to achieve their learning goals. They are excited about discovering the world around them and are willing to have a go, even when something is new or difficult.
Just as importantly, they genuinely care for one another. Whether it is inviting someone from another grade to build Lego together, encouraging a classmate during a soccer game, helping someone in the classroom, or simply noticing when a friend needs support, these everyday acts of kindness create the warm and welcoming environment that visitors so often comment on.
One of the greatest strengths of a small school is the opportunities it creates for every child.
Recently, our debating team competed against one of the largest primary schools in our area and came away with the win. We were incredibly proud of our students, but what stayed with me was learning that the other school had more than ninety students competing for just eight places on its debating team.
That really reinforced something I already knew.
Here at Arcadia, many more of our students have the opportunity to represent their school — whether that is through debating, public speaking, choir, band, dance, sport, leadership or the many clubs and activities available to them.
In a small school, children do not have to wait for opportunity to find them. Opportunity knows their name.
And when children are given opportunities, wonderful things happen. They develop confidence. They discover passions. They learn resilience. They find their voice. Most importantly, they begin to believe in what they can achieve.
At Arcadia, success is not about giving every child exactly the same experience. It is about giving every child the opportunity to discover their strengths, build confidence and find where they can flourish.
One of the things I love most about our school is that leadership is not something reserved for adults. It belongs to our students as well.
This term, Orlando, supported by Gage established an Art Club on Thursdays, while Lucie and Elka are starting a netball clinic this Wednesday and each Wednesday lunch for our Year 2 to 4 students. These are not activities that adults organised for them. They are opportunities our students created for other students.
They are wonderful examples of initiative, leadership and generosity, and they demonstrate the confidence our students develop when they are encouraged to contribute to their school.
Of course, schools do not flourish because of students alone. They flourish because of partnerships.
We are incredibly fortunate to be part of such a supportive community. Our families, local businesses, community organisations and groups such as our Rural Fire Service all contribute to making Arcadia the special place it is. Thank you for the many ways you support our students and our school.
I would particularly like to acknowledge our wonderful P&C Association.
Our P&C volunteers give generously of their time, energy and ideas to support our students and create opportunities that would not be possible without them. Whether they are organising events, fundraising, supporting school initiatives or simply stepping in whenever help is needed, they are an invaluable part of our school community.
On behalf of our students and staff, thank you for everything you do. Your contribution is deeply appreciated.
I would also like to acknowledge our incredible staff.
Every member of our team , including teachers, education support staff such as those in wellbeing and learning support; administration school operations and technology — plays a vital role in helping our students to thrive and succeed.
Their dedication, care and commitment ensure that every child is known, valued and supported to achieve their very best. I feel incredibly privileged to work alongside such a talented, dedicated and caring group of people.
Today, we have also celebrated Book Week, and this year’s theme, The Symphony of Stories, could not be more fitting.
Stories have incredible power. They spark our imagination, help us understand different perspectives, introduce us to remarkable people and places, and inspire us to dream about what is possible.
Every book a child reads helps them discover something new — not only about the world, but also about themselves.
Every page a child turns opens another door – to knowledge, creativity, empathy and possibility.
As we celebrate together today, I hope you have seen more than costumes and performances. I hope you have seen our proudly Arcadian school where children are encouraged to be curious, to be kind, to lead, to challenge themselves and to belong.
That is what Public Education Week is really about.
Thank you for entrusting us with your children. It is a privilege that none of us takes for granted.
In just a few moments, you will enjoy the inaugural performance from our Dance Group. Afterwards, I warmly invite you to visit our classrooms, meet our staff and students, and see our learning spaces in action.
Thank you once again for joining us today, for supporting public education and for being such an important part of the Arcadia Public School community.
